Planting Seeds for the Future is a hands-on community event created to help children and families connect with gardening, sustainability, creativity, and the natural world.
Through interactive activities, local partnerships, and opportunities to learn by doing, we’re creating space for the next generation to get their hands dirty, ask questions, make things, and discover how deeply connected they are to the world around them.
A day built around curiosity
Children learn differently when they can touch, build, plant, observe, and explore.
Planting Seeds for the Future brings together educators, growers, makers, local businesses, nonprofits, and community organizations to create experiences that make learning tangible.
Families may explore everything from seed starting and composting to wildlife, pollinators, creative reuse, gardening, art, music, and other hands-on activities rooted in sustainability and community care.
The goal isn’t simply to teach children how to grow a plant.
It’s to help them understand that they are part of something much bigger.
Planting more than seeds
A seed is a small thing.
But give a child the opportunity to plant one, watch it grow, learn what it needs, and understand where food and flowers actually come from — and suddenly that seed becomes a lesson in patience, responsibility, ecology, and care.
Planting Seeds for the Future was created around a simple idea:
When children have meaningful experiences with the natural world, we plant the foundation for a more connected, curious, and environmentally conscious future.
Built by community
This event belongs to the community that helps create it.
Local organizations, businesses, educators, volunteers, growers, artists, and families each bring something different to the experience.
Some teach.
Some provide materials.
Some sponsor activities.
Some volunteer their time.
Some simply show up with their children and participate.
Together, those contributions create something none of us could build alone.

Our first Planting Seeds for the Future event brought families, educators, local businesses, volunteers, and community partners together for a day rooted in sustainability, creativity, and hands-on learning.
From seed starting and composting to upcycled planters, wildlife education, coloring tables, music, and community connection, children were given the opportunity to explore, create, and learn alongside the people and organizations helping care for our community.
And most importantly, they got to participate.
They planted.
They made things.
They asked questions.
They got dirty.
They learned where things come from.
They experienced their community showing up for them.
Thank you to every parent, child, volunteer, sponsor, educator, business, and local organization who helped make our first event possible.
The community that helped us grow
Planting Seeds for the Future is possible because local organizations choose to invest their time, knowledge, resources, and care into the next generation.
What comes next
We’re just getting started.
Planting Seeds for the Future was never intended to be a one-time event.
We want to continue creating opportunities for local children and families to learn from the growers, educators, makers, environmental organizations, businesses, and community members who make Humboldt such a unique place to grow up.
As the program grows, so will the opportunities to participate.
